Check Out My New Show With PopSugar! Tressed Out

2018 has been a year of undeniable #growth and #manifestation!

I started the #LipstickNCurls platform almost 10 years ago to help us natural + curly girls learn more about our hair, and celebrate the skin we’re in. Little did I know, picking up a camera and figuring it all out would land me with my very own show with Popsugar!

As we’ve ventured on this journey together, we’ve had some amazing hair days — but Lord knows we’ve taken a ton of L’s too! Our tresses have a way of stressing us out, like no job or man could! LOL. But most importantly, our hair shares a story with the world, that can’t fully be expressed with words. Our hair is our crown, and for many — a source of confidence and strength. I’m so thankful to the entire PopSugar team for seeing the beauty in OUR hair tales, and helping make this dream of mine a reality. The pilot episode of my new show #TressedOut is now live, and I can’t wait to hear what you think! YOU helped make this happen, and I’m excited to continue on our #journey together.

Share your thoughts about the show with me here, or on Instagram and Facebook!

HAIR Quality over QUANTITY!

Hey boo thangs! I wanted to first wish you all a happy 2018!!

I have set many goals for this New Year and one of those goals is to be more aware when it comes to my hair! In many ways, we don’t realize how being a product junkie can really take a toll on your wallet. A $20 product here, a $15 product there, after a while you just buy to try and then forget why you even bought the product to begin with!

I am soooo guilty of this and on top of this disjointed purchasing habit, for some reason I always feel like the more expensive a product is, the better it has to be, right?

I remember learning about this concept when I was in my master’s program. In higher education, most parents think that the more a school costs to attend, the more promise and reward it has. Research actually shows that this isn’t the case. Like many things in life, we think if it costs more, there’s more value.

When it came to hair products, I felt the same way for a really long time! It hadn’t dawned on me until recently that after trying out my own DIY treatments to some of the most luxurious hair care brands out there, cost is the LAST thing that determines a hair product’s value.

I’ve been closely working with Herbal Essences for the past year and have been able to really see that  price point doesn’t always matter when it comes to quality products.  Herbal Essences bio:renew collections are my go-to for shampoo & conditioner! Now many of you probably don’t think Herbal Essences is for “our hair type”. Let me change your mind! I have been using the Coconut Milk and line for over a year and my hair has never been more soft and healthy! (That’s with coloring, too!) The shampoos and conditioners in the bio:renew collections are packed with  nutrients your hair will love, with a blend of antioxidants, aloe and sea kelp.

As a curly girl, it can get daunting trying to find what works best for our hair. At such a great price point ($6.99 a bottle!) Herbal Essences has quality products that will leave your hair manageable, soft, and smelling to die for!

Give it a try yourself! If it’s your first time trying the line – my advice is to always grab the conditioner first! ;D I know how we can be when it comes to shampoo, girl. By trying the conditioner, I know you’ll go back for the shampoo!

What are your favorite hair products that give you awesome hair without breaking the bank? Share them with me down below!

My Hair Transformed My Life #LETLIFEIN

This is a sponsored post by Herbal Essences

Wow! Can you say #Inspired?! Many people don’t connect with their hair, or outer appearance in general, as deeply as the women in this video do. Even for myself – embracing my natural hair sparked my journey of self discovery. With the decision to wear my natural curls as a 19 year old, I had no idea how much that decision would completely change my life.

“Cutting Off My Hair Felt Like I Was Cutting Off That Past Person”

Taking a leap into the journey of self-discovery is not a light-hearted decision. It takes COURAGE to say “I am no longer pretending to be someone YOU want me to be. I choose to figure out who I am and live MY truth.” I find any person who does this as an inspiration because it is seriously one of the hardest things (if not THE hardest thing) to do in life.

“You Can’t Have Your Hair Like This – It’s Too Edgy”

When cultures and social norms control so much of our behaviors and personalities – it’s hard to break away from that security and comfortable place. Fitting in is comfortable. Standing out is hard…but once you see past that fear – you recognize that the happiness and self-love that flows from that is unmatched. It will literally change your life.

“Liberating Myself So Everyone Can Be Free”

Herbal Essences is a brand that wants to encourage and support those of us on a path of self-discovery and those who need courage to take the leap. Creating products that understand and support how transformative hair can be is one of the biggest reasons why I connected with the brand.

Through 2018, I will be partnering with Herbal Essences to not only show you how the products work but also how the hashtag #LetLifeIn can influence so many aspects of your life – hair and beyond.

Check out these two videos to see my experience with the Herbal Essences bio:renew products and stay tuned for more 🙂

It’s More Than “Just Hair” #LetLifeIn

This post is sponsored by Herbal Essences

Over the past few months I have been collaborating with Herbal Essences on their latest “Let Life In” campaign promoting their new collection of hair products withtheir bio:renew technology. In case you missed it, here’s the video I created using the products to style my hair and also my post about my Vacation Beauty Essentials where I featured the bio:renew Coconut Milk Oil Crème and Coconut Oil Curl Defining Mousse.

For me, my hair has always been a huge part of my life. Growing up biracial, people always looked at my skin tone and hair texture as a way to see “what I was.” “I’m human!!” I would think. I started questioning my own race and place in the world because being mixed meant I wasn’t this or that, because I was both at the same time.

My hair was the biggest indicator of my heritage. My curls showed that I was “mixed with something,” and as any middle and high school girl does, I just wanted to fit in!

(Me and my twin sister, Simone – 2007)

I went through phases where I begged my mother to put relaxers in my hair and wore my hair straight all through high school and parts of college.

It wasn’t until I was older that I realized that I didn’t need to change my hair, or myself, to be me. Fitting in turned from an obsession to looking like everyone else, to realizing that “fitting in” meant “follower.” Fitting in meant “average.” I was far from a follower and the furthest thing from average.

I really connected with “Let Life In” message because that’s exactly what I did when I chose to stop forcing myself to fit into a box that really never existed. I decided to let go of society’s expectations of me and let in MY OWN expectations for myself instead.

See, it’s deeper than “just hair.” The acceptance of my natural curls was the tipping point for me in the process of truly finding myself. Rocking my curly hair was the catalyst I needed to say “You know what, I’m not like any of these other kids at school – I’m NOT average…I’m SPECIAL.” From that self-affirming thought process, “LipsticknCurls” was birthed. In the beginning, my platform was just about hair and makeup. Now, it has transformed into a true reflection of my own self-love. I utilize my platform to show others that if I can love myself, so can they.

#LetLifeIn. Let go of whatever is holding you back from being YOU. Whatever that trigger is for you to jump into your passion and life’s purpose, embrace it.

Even if you think its “just hair”…It may be the very thing that changes your life, like it did mine.

XO, Jade

Vacation Beauty Essentials

This post in sponsored by Herbal Essences

A couple weeks ago my best friend and twin sister joined me for the ULTIMATE girls relaxation weekend in Miami. As we are all now hitting our late twenties, this Miami trip was less about hitting the hottest club and more about enjoying some serious girl time.

As a notorious over-packer, I actually made an effort to pack light for this trip! It’s always so hard to plan which beauty products I want to bring with me on vacation so now having been there and back; here are my vacation beauty essentials that I ACTUALLY used on vacay.

Vacation Beauty Essentials| HAIR

Herbal Essences Curl Define MousseArgan Oil of Morocco Oil Infused Creme

When it came down to it – I knew I could only bring a couple products for my hair. Usually, I like to leave it up to how I feel on washday before deciding which products to use for styling my hair. In this case – I knew I had to bring products that were fool-proof. I decided to go with my Herbal Essences faves because I knew I would get soft and fluffy curls with these stylers. Also I knew the creme especially would be so easy to throw into my beach bag and add to my hair when I was fresh out of the ocean or pool. You all went crazy over my hair in this photo I posted on Instagram so I had to share the details here!

Vacation Beauty Essentials| SKIN

Maui Babe Browning Lotion Tanning Salon Formula + Sun Protectant Lotion SPF 30

I was ready to soak up all the sun I could while in Miami but not at the expense of my skin! So of course I had to bring a strong sun protectant that would go great with a tanning lotion so I could get the best of both worlds! This combo brings a strong sp 80 while attracting just enough sun to get a nice tan. Win-Win!

Mario Badescu Facial Spray With Aloe, Herb and Rosewater

If you have not hopped on the facial spray bandwagon yet – you’ll definitely want to as spring and summer roll around! I love facial mists because they are a great way to freshen up on a hot day or just give your skin a bit of love on the go. This one is a favorite of mine particularly for the smell! Has a nice fragrance that reminds me of perfume but it’s a very gentle smell that will leave you feeling relaxed and refreshed.

[show_shopthepost_widget id=”2846538″]

Garnier SkinActive Clearly Brighter Anti-Sun Damage Daily Moisturizer SPF 30

This moisturizer is 1) going to give your face that needed sun protection and 2) the compact size make it perfect for packing with the rest of your beauty goodies to the beach.

[show_shopthepost_widget id=”2846539″]

Algenist Power Recharging Night Pressed Serum

If you aren’t already using a great night cream, invest in one! I started using night creams a little over a year ago and my skin has really thanked me for it. This powerful serum is great for repairing and rejuvenating your skin after a long day of sun exposure and movin’ & groovin’ around town!

Vacation Beauty Essentials| MAKEUP

Becca Backlight Priming Filter

The shimmer-undertone of this primer is super bomb for when you don’t want to put on a full face of makeup, but want a bit of glow. I especially liked this paired with the next beauty essential!

[show_shopthepost_widget id=”2846536″]

Laura Mercier Mineral Pressed Powder

When I am not wearing moisturizer or the Becca Primer alone, I add this powder on top for a sheer finish that let’s the glow from the primer shine through without making you look gloomy ALL over. Add a bit of mascara and gloss – BOOM! Ready to go!
